Phases On The Moon Essay What causes day and night (including seasonal changes in the number of hours of daylight)? When the Earth spins around on its axis, it creates night and day on Earth. The Sun rises in the east and sets in the west, turning day into night. On Earth, the length of day and night usually changes with the seasons. Why are there different seasons? As stated, the Earth spins on a tilted axis about once every 24 hours to create what we know as night and day. This axis is an invisible line through the centre of the Earth. The northern point is the North Pole and the southern point is the South Pole. The Earth spins anti-clockwise. The Earth orbits around the sun about once every 365 days. As this happens, the tilt of the Earth causes different sections of the Earth to point toward the Sun. This causes different amounts of sunlight to reach the same surface area of the Earth throughout the year. The different amounts of sunlight lead to different weather at this location. In the northern hemisphere, when the North Pole points towards the Sun, the Suns light is more directly overhead and it is summer. When the North Pole points towards the Sun, the South Pole tilts away from the sun resulting in scattered and less direct light. People in the southern hemisphere experience winter while people in the northern hemisphere have summer. The seasons of spring and autumn are created when the Earths tilt is neither towards, nor away from the Sun. These seasons usually have milder temperatures. Why are there different phases of the Moon? The Moon travels around the Earth in a circle called an orbit. It takes about 28 days to go one time around the Earth. The Sun always lights up half of the Moon at one time. The Moon is not a light source; it has no light of its own. We can only see the Moon because it reflects light from the Sun. The Moon appears to change shape (phases) but what we are actually seeking is the Moon lit up by the light from the Sun in different ways on different days. What is the science knowledge that supports the teaching of these two ideas? During the Renaissance, Nicholas Copernicus proposed a heliocentric model of the Solar System. His work was defended, expanded upon, and corrected by Galileo Galilei and Johannes Kelper. Galileo added the innovation of using telescopes to enhance his observations. Kelper was the first to devise a system that described correctly the details of the motion of the planets with the Sun at the centre. However, it was left to Newtons invention of celestial dynamics and his law of gravitation to finally explain the motions of the planets. Newton also developed the reflecting telescope. During the nineteenth century, attention to the three body problem by Euler, Clairaut and DAlembert led to more accurate predictions about the motions of the Moon and planets. Part 2: Eliciting the childrens ideas you are to research two different techniques for assessing the childrens ideas in science The aims of primary science can be broadly divided into two categories: To stimulate pupils curiosity in the world around them and encourage critical and creative thinking; To create a foundation for science at secondary school. To fulfil these aims, pupils need to acquire both factual knowledge and the skills of scientific enquiry, identifying questions that can be addressed scientifically; planning and carrying out experiments; evaluating data; and recognising the limitations of their own and others work. The National Curriculum was introduced in 1989, with science as a core subject. Before 1989, the science curriculum varied widely between primary schools. While the National Curriculum is statutory, schools have the freedom to decide how to teach its content to best meet the needs of their pupils. Children tend to be enthusiastic towards science at a young age, as they explore the world around them. However, attitudes towards school subjects, including science, often becomes less positive when they transfer to secondary school. As a result, the DfES is focusing its attention on secondary science. However, the primary years are seen as crucial in developing pupils longer term interest in science. (postnote, 2003, p2). Further, recent research has suggested that pupils interest in science may start to decline at primary school, which are discussed below in more detail below, include: Whether science teaching is adapted by individual schools to reflect the interest of their pupils; The focus on preparation of SATs tests in the last year of primary schools; Primary teachers level of scientific knowledge and confidence in teaching science. Teaching Primary Science In the 1970s and 1980s, teachers lack of scientific knowledge was seen as a major barrier to developing primary science. Primary teaching is largely a female profession and at the time few girls studied science other than biology. Today, primary teachers scientific knowledge is widely recognised as having improved but the debate over the level of scientific knowledge needed by a primary teacher in order to teach effectively remains active. (postnote, 2003, p3). Some professional scientific institutions argue that factual scientific knowledge is paramount. This view is based on a concern that scientific misconceptions are being taught and reinforced in some classrooms. Misconceptions (for example, that the Sun moves round a stationary Earth) are often formed at a young age and are difficult to change. Ofsted has raised particular concerns over the primary sciences, where it reports that many primary teachers are working at the limit of their understanding). On the other hand, Ofsted has found that the best teaching often involves scientific enquiry and some argue that the emphasis on factual knowledge distracts from this. The essential aim of scientific enquiry, to develop childrens thinking skills, can be seen as the basis of any good primary teaching. However, there is concern that some teachers are unclear of the purpose of scientific enquiry, which prevents them from teaching effectively. The Purpose of Assessment Clarifying the main purpose for which young children are assessed can help determine what kinds of assessments would be the most appropriate. Assessment of individual children might serve one of the following purposes: To determine progress on significant developmental achievements; To diagnose learning and teaching problems; To help in instruction and curriculum decisions; To serve as a basis for reporting to parents; and To assist a child with assessing his or her own progress. Decisions regarding the purpose of assessment should begin with discussion among all the stakeholders parents, educators, and other members of the community as appropriate. The group may want to keep in mind that: Plans, strategies, and assessment instruments are differentially suited for each of the following potential purposes of assessment; An overall assessment should include the four categories of educational goals: knowledge, skills, dispositions, and feelings; Assessments made during childrens informal work and play are most likely to minimise the many potential errors of various assessment strategies. (Katz, 1995, p67). The Risks Of Assessing Young Children Young children are notoriously poor test-takers: perhaps they are sometimes confused by being asked questions that they think the tester must already know the answers to. There is reason to suggest that the younger the child being evaluated, assessed, or tested, the more errors are made (Shepard, 1994; Ratcliff, 1995). If this principle is sound, then the younger the children: the longer the children live with a label (a true or false one), the more difficult it may become to discard it. Assessment Technique Number 1 Earth, Sun and Moon Assessment Test This test has 14 questions, which are listed below: What shape is the Earth? Put the Moon, Sun and Earth in order of size, biggest first. Why is it difficult to collect evidence about the Sun? Why does the Sun appear to move across the sky? Draw the Moon. Explain why you have it in this way? How long does it take for the Moon to orbit the Earth? How long does it take the Earth to make one complete turn on its axis? Where does the Sun go at night? What does orbit mean? Why do we get more hours of daylight per day in the summer? Where would you be standing if you got 24 hours of daylight every day in summer? If you were still in the same place as in question 11, how many hours per day of darkness would you get in winter? Which TWO changes make plants start to grow in the spring? What was your favourite part of this topic? Foundation Stage 2 children aged 4 As stated, very young children do not perform well in tests. This test is more like a knowledge and understanding checklist and can be used in a variety of circumstances. If children are going to gain scientific knowledge and retain an interest in the subject as they progress through school, then the learning process must be fun, interactive and stimulating. With the two 4-year olds the test was used to structure a highly interactive dialogue and to assess their current level of knowledge and understanding of the subject matter. Both children knew quite a lot about day and night, and the shape of the planets. This information had been developed through a variety of sources from school, mum and dad, play with friends, the TV. The dialogue lasted approximately 15 minutes and covered about six or seven of the questions on the list. Asking direct questions did not produce positive results. The children become agitated. However, when they become fully engaged in discussion the test could be used to assess their current level of knowledge. This technique, if used correctly, is a useful and versatile assessment method. The childrens responses to the questions can be recorded and revisited at a later date to determine how much new learning has occurred. This technique is also useful when used in conjunction with a variety of learning resources about the subject matter. Year 2 2 children aged 7 In this situation the teacher used less prompts to engage each child in discussion about each of the questions in the test. Again the technique proved for assessing the childrens current level of knowledge and understanding of the subject matter. This session lasted 30 minutes and nearly covered all of the questions. When the children became particularly animated about some aspect of the subject matter then it was more productive to let them express their ideas and opinions for some time rather than simply passing onto the next question. Assessment Technique 2 Concept Cartoons These are a new approach in teaching, learning and assessment in science. They were created by Brenda Keogh and Stuart Naylor in 1991. They feature cartoon-style drawings showing different characters arguing about an everyday situation. They are designed to intrigue, to provoke discussion and to stimulate scientific thinking. They may not have a right answer. They are available with background science notes for teachers. A typical Concept Cartoon has the following: Visual representation of scientific ideas Minimal text, in dialogue form Alternative viewpoints on the situation Scientific ideas are applied in everyday situations The scientifically acceptable viewpoint in the alternatives The alternatives With both sets of children, concept cartoons, proved to be very popular. With the 4 year-olds they obviously needed more assistance to help work through each situation that was a portrayed in each cartoon. The 7 year-olds needed less help and were more able to freely express their ideas and opinions about different aspects of the subject matter. Part 3: Foundation Stage 2 children aged 4 What the children got right: There is night and day There are 4 seasons, which are caused by the relationship between the Earth and the Sun The Sun is a star and not a planet Misconceptions: The Moon is made of cheese The Sun goes round the Earth The Earth stands still As stated, the 4 year-olds got their ideas about the Moon, the Sun and the Earth from a wide variety of sources. A major problem with developing scientific knowledge is that the children cannot relate to, many of the concepts in the daily lives. Yes they understand there is night because they go to sleep at night it is physically black. They wake up when it is day. However, the Earth spinning on its axis and orbiting around the Sun is something you can tell them but because they cannot go home and find something to relate to they tend to forget this information. If you simply feed them more facts they end up being more confused. Year 2 2 children aged 7 The 7 year-olds are generally more clued up about many of the concepts that were discussed. However, when probed about their level of curiosity about the subject matter they said that they did not really like the subject. Yes they agreed that it was important to understand basic scientific facts but they said they were pre-occupied with other things. They could not easily relate to scientific knowledge in their everyday lives. Misconceptions come from a variety of sources but perhaps a loss of interest in the subject matter was the major cause of this incorrect information. The 7 year-olds were not interested in finding out the correct information. Perhaps the biggest problem with teaching primary science is that the pupils find it extremely difficult to apply scientific knowledge to their everyday lives. There are three key aspects to learning something new: Knowledge i.e. facts e.g. the Earth spins on its axis every 24 hours. Comprehension putting the facts into a context, which the pupils understand there are lots of learning resources, which can be used to achieve comprehension. Application this is when the pupils can apply this new knowledge to some aspect of their daily lives. Application is a major weakness in many of the strategies that are used to teach primary school pupils science. Where schools spend a lot of time relating science to other areas of the curriculum and the childrens everyday environment at home and at the school then the childrens knowledge and understanding of science dramatically increases. Part 4 A Strategy To Improve The Quality of Teaching Primary Science Science at Key Stage 1 Planning For One Childs (Aged 7) Response Section 1 Introduction The activity for this section involved asking Tom to draw and explain a picture showing how these would look to a traveller in space. He was asked the following questions: Is the Earth flat? Is the Sun bigger than the Moon? Does the Sun move? Knowledge / Comprehension / Activities These questions were used to ascertain Toms current level of knowledge and understanding. Tom knew that the Earth is not flat. He knew that the Sun was bigger than the Moon. He was not quite sure whether the Sun moved. This is an area, which requires further investigation. ICT The Paint software package was used to allow Tom to paint the Earth, Moon and Sun. Section 2 Flat or Spherical Children Should Learn: That the Sun, Earth and Moon are approximately spherical That it is sometimes difficult to collect evidence to test scientific ideas and that evidence may be indirect Knowledge / Comprehension Children recognise that the Earth, Sun and Moon are spheres Describe some indirect evidence that the Earth is spherical e.g. ships appearing and disappearing over the horizon Activities Using photographs of the Earth, Sun and Moon taken from space, Tom was asked to confirm whether the aforementioned bodies were flat or spherical. It was explained to Tom that it is only within recent times (i.e. the last 40 years) that we have had access to photographic evidence from space about Earth being spherical. Tom was asked why people at an earlier time thought that the Earth was flat. Some ideas were explored. In the Middle Ages for example, people could travel far and far as they were concerned the Earth was flat. In those days for the vast majority of people their eyesight and their ears were the primary source of information. Science as such did not exist. ICT The Internet was used to look for additional photographs of the Earth taken from space. Section 3 Size and Distance Children Should Learn: About the relative sizes of the Sun, Moon and Earth Knowledge / Comprehension Children select three spheres to represent the Earth, Sun and Moon recognising which is largest and which is smallest and making a reasonable match to relative size Activities The drawings that Tom had made earlier and the images he had made using Paint were used for the next activity. He was presented with a range of spherical objects: tennis ball, ball bearing, table tennis ball etc and was asked to select three of the objects, which he considered represented the relative size of the Earth, Moon and Sun. ICT Instead of asking Tom to select from a range of spherical objects he could have used Paint to produce spherical images of varying sizes to represent the Earth, Moon and Sun. Section 4 The Changing Position Of The Sun What Children Should Learn? That the Sun appears to move across the sky over the course of a day That evidence may be interpreted in more than one way Knowledge / Comprehension Children describe how the apparent position of the Sun changes over the course of a day and clarify that this does not mean that the Sun is moving Activities Tom was asked about where the Sun shines into the school and his home at different times of day. He was asked to consider what happened to his shadow during the course of the day. This activity could be extended to looking at shadows in the playground at different times of the day. ICT Tom was provided with assistance to use the Internet to search for websites, which showed different lengths of shadows. Section 5 The Movement Of The Earth Children Should Learn: That is the Earth that moves, not the Sun, and the Earth spins on its axis once every 24 hours That it is daytime in the part of the Earth facing the Sun and night-time in the part of the Earth away from the Sun Knowledge / Comprehension Children illustrate (e.g. using drawings etc) that different parts of the Earth face the Sun during the course of the day and where it is day and night Explain that the movement of the Sun is a result of the Earth rotating or spinning Activities Tom was asked to view a short excerpt from a video, which showed the Earth spinning on its axis. A short discussion ensued about how the content of the video and the concepts that were illustrated. A table lamp and a tennis ball were used to illustrate the concepts of day and night. ICT Websites which demonstrate the aforementioned concepts and which are interactive. Summary Whilst the outlined strategies were effective at helping Tom to increase his knowledge and understanding of the Earth, Moon and Sun it is likely that his retention of this information would be increased by linking these studies to other aspects of the curriculum. For example, green issues, how does the Sun affect Eskimos, people who live in Africa etc. This approach would should to increase the comprehension of the pupils with regard to sections 1 to 5.

Negotiation Strategy Analysis: Vendor Negotiations
Most businesses incorporate strong negotiation skills, especially within the purchasing department. A company must be able to negotiate with vendors to ensure they receive the best price available on items both used and consumed by the business; this also includes hardware and software considerations. Regardless of the industry, building vendor relationships are necessary. The writer will look at vendor negotiations from two different perspectives with one common goal; negotiate the best contract for all parties. The writer will then compare and contrast the different negotiation strategies as they apply to the oil and gas industry. Vendor Negotiation Process The first article is about Mark Carbrey; Chief Information Officer (CIO) for a Massachusetts-based automotive service organization. His negotiation strategies allow up and coming team members to gain valuable experience with the negotiation process (Overby, 2010). He teaches his team to treat the vendors like a partner. He also teaches them to sort out what is important for the business, and to fact check with contacts that have similar contracts to ensure a fair market price from the vendor. Carbrey also stresses the importance of acquiring the support from the board of directors down (Overby, 2010). The second article takes a slightly different approach to vendor negotiations than the first article. Joe Auer, Founder, and president of International Computer Negotiations (ICN), has over 35 years experience helping technology users do better and safer deals with vendors (ICN, 2011). Auer believes that attitude toward contract negotiation is one of the most important issues the negotiator faces. Auer's article is a bulleted list of the ââ¬Å"best practicesâ⬠a negotiator should adhere to during the negotiation process. He uses the analogy of a pilot with 20 years experience still uses a checklist before take-off. So too should a negotiator. He reminds the negotiator that a supplier often places untimely stress on himself by telling his boss, ââ¬Å"the deal is doneâ⬠before he has confirmation from the negotiator. Negotiators must use this to their advantage. He also shows that wording is subjective such as using the word preferred instead of needed. Auer states the negotiation process begins the first time information transfers to a potential vendor. He also states the negotiator gains or loses power with every succeeding transaction (Auer, 2011). Application to Work Environment The oil and gas industry is very competitive. Entry into the market is easy but sustainability is difficult. The organization plagued by many of the same issues in information technology that most industries face. Using negotiating strategies is crucial to ensuring the best contract is both functional and valuable. The first article gave sound advice for setting the groundwork of negotiation strategy but did not explain the common pitfalls inexperienced negotiators face. The second article gave a clear checklist that a negotiator can refer to at any point during the negotiation process. Conclusion Negotiation skills are a necessary part of today's highly competitive marketplace. Building vendor relationships through the negotiation process is a delicate process. Although there is no one way to negotiate the best contract, one can incorporate the expertise of those with experience to develop the skills necessary to negotiate a fair market price with terms that meet the expectations of both parties. The two articles featured in this paper show very different perspectives with one common goal; to educate the reader with tools used in past negotiations. This veil is lifted as Toni Morrison successfully attempts to inform readers in realistic detail of the animal like treatment that the black population endured in her novel, Beloved. Through explicit scenes of abuse as well as character recollections of memories once locked away, audiences are given an insight into the torture that convinced black slaves that they were nothing more than animals. Firstly, schoolteacher ensures that future generations continue the white racist agenda of ridding the black population of their human traits. Secondly, the inhumane treatment of slaves by the white masters is returned through animal like behavior. Finally, the suffering endured at Sweet Home challenged the slavesââ¬â¢ most valued qualities. The dehumanizing treatment of slaves leads to the deterioration of their identities. The white slave owner at Sweet Home, schoolteacher, makes a point to pass on racist outlooks to the future generation of slave owners, divesting the black population of any sense of humanity. Through comparative analysis, schoolteacher lectures his nephews on the similarities between animals and black slaves. Books are concentrated sources of wisdom. The more books you read, the more wisdom you expose yourself to. As a Singaporean Chinese, my main languages are English, Mandarin and Hokkien (a Chinese dialect). Out of interest, I took up language courses in the past few years such as Japanese and Bahasa Indonesian. I realized learning a language is a whole new skill altogether and the process of acquainting with a new language and culture is a totally a mind-opening experience. 3. Pick up a new hobby. Beyond just your usual favorite hobbies, is there something new you can pick up? Any new sport you can learn? Examples are fencing, golf, rock climbing, football, canoeing, or ice skating. Your new hobby can also be a recreational hobby. For example, pottery, Italian cooking, dancing, wine appreciation, web design, etc. Learning something new requires you to stretch yourself in different aspects, whether physically, mentally or emotionally. 4. Take up a new course. Is there any new course you can join? Courses are a great way to gain new knowledge and skills. It doesnââ¬â¢t have to be a long-term course ââ¬â seminars or workshops serve their purpose too. Iââ¬â¢ve been to a few workshops and they have helped me gain new insights which I had not considered before. 5. Create an inspirational room. Your environment sets the mood and tone for you. If you are living in an inspirational environment, you are going to be inspired every day. In the past, I didnââ¬â¢t like my room at all because I thought it was messy and dull. A few years ago, I decided this was the end of it ââ¬â I started on a ââ¬Å"Mega Room Revampâ⬠project and overhauled my room. The end result? A room I totally relish being in and inspires me to be at my peak every day. 6. Overcome your fears. All of us have fears. Fear of uncertainty, fear of public speaking, fear of riskâ⬠¦ All our fears keep us in the same position and prevent us from growing. Recognize that your fears reflect areas where you can grow. I always think of fears as the compass for growth. If I have a fear about something, it represents something Iââ¬â¢ve yet to address, and addressing it helps me to grow. 7. Level up your skills. If you have played video games before especially RPGs, youââ¬â¢ll know the concept of leveling up ââ¬â gaining experience so you can be better and stronger. As a blogger, Iââ¬â¢m constantly leveling up my writing skills. As a speaker, Iââ¬â¢m constantly leveling up my public engagement abilities. What skills can you level up? 8. Wake up early. Waking up early (say, 5-6am) has been acknowledged by many (Anthony Robbins, Robin Sharma, among other self-help gurus) to improve your productivity and your quality of life. I feel itââ¬â¢s because when you wake up early, your mindset is already set to continue the momentum and proactively live out the day. Seth recently wrote a waking up early series which you should check out to help cultivate this habit. 9. Have a weekly exercise routine. A better you starts with being in better physical shape. I personally make it a point to jog at least 3 times a week, at least 30 minutes each time. You may want to mix it up with jogging, gym lessons and swimming for variation. 10. Start your life handbook. A life handbook is an idea I started 3 years ago. Basically, itââ¬â¢s a book which contains the essentials on how you can live your life to the fullest, such as your purpose, your values and goals. Sort of like your manual for your life. I started my life handbook since 2007 and itââ¬â¢s been a crucial enabler in my progress. 11. Write a letter to your future self. What do you see yourself as 5 years from now? Will you be the same? Different? What kind of person will you be? Write a letter to your future self ââ¬â 1 year from now will be a good start ââ¬â and seal it. Make a date in your calendar to open it 1 year from now. Then start working to become the person you want to open that letter. 12. Get out of your comfort zone. Real growth comes with hard work and sweat. Being too comfortable doesnââ¬â¢t help us grow ââ¬â it makes us stagnate. What is your comfort zone? Do you stay in most of the time? Do you keep to your own space when out with other people? Shake your routine up. Do something different. By exposing yourself to a new context, youââ¬â¢re literally growing as you learn to act in new circumstances. 3. Put someone up to a challenge. Competition is one of the best ways to grow. Set a challenge (weight loss, exercise, financial challenge, etc) and compete with an interested friend to see who achieves the target first. Through the process, both of you will gain more than if you were to set off on the target alone. 14. Identify your blind spots. Scientifically, blind spots refer to areas our eyes are not capable of seeing. In personal development terms, blind spots are things about ourselves we are unaware of. Discovering our blind spots help us discover our areas of improvement. One exercise I use to discover my blind spots is to identify all the things/events/people that trigger me in a day ââ¬â trigger meaning making me feel annoyed/weird/affected. These represent my blind spots. Itââ¬â¢s always fun to do the exercise because I discover new things about myself, even if I may already think I know my own blind spots (but then they wouldnââ¬â¢t be blind spots would they? ). You read "Steps to Success" in category "Papers" After that, I work on steps to address them. 15. Ask for feedback. As much as we try to improve, we will always have blind spots. Asking for feedback gives us an additional perspective. Some people to approach will be friends, family, colleagues, boss, or even acquaintances, since they will have no preset bias and can give their feedback objectively. 16. Stay focused with to-do lists. I start my day with a list of tasks I want to complete and this helps make me stay focused. In comparison, the days when I donââ¬â¢t do this end up being extremely unproductive. For example, part of my to-do list for today is to write a guest post at LifeHack. Org, and this is why Iââ¬â¢m writing this now! Since my work requires me to use my computer all the time, I use Free Sticky Notes to manage my to-do lists. Itââ¬â¢s really simple to use and itââ¬â¢s a freeware, so I recommend you check it out. 17. Set Big Hairy Audacious Goals (BHAGs). Iââ¬â¢m a big fan of setting BHAGs. BHAGs stretch you beyond your normal capacity since they are big and audacious ââ¬â you wouldnââ¬â¢t think of attempting them normally. What are BHAGs you can embark on, which youââ¬â¢ll feel absolutely on top of the world once you complete them? Set them and start working on them. 18. Acknowledge your flaws. Everyone has flaws. Whatââ¬â¢s most important is to understand them, acknowledge them, and address them. What do you think are your flaws? What are the flaws you can work on now? How do you want to address them? 19. Get into action. The best way to learn and improve is to take action. What is something you have been meaning to do? How can you take action on it immediately? Waiting doesnââ¬â¢t get anything done. Taking action gives you immediate results to learn from. 20. Learn from people who inspire you. Think about people you admire. People who inspire you. These people reflect certain qualities you want to have for yourself too. What are the qualities in them you want to have for yourself? How can you acquire these qualities? 21. Quit a bad habit. Are there any bad habits you can lose? Oversleeping? Not exercising? Being late? Slouching? Nail biting? Smoking? Hereââ¬â¢s some help on how you can quit a bad habit. 22. Cultivate a new habit. Some good new habits to cultivate include reading books (#1), waking up early (#8), exercising (#9), reading a new personal development article a day (#40) and meditating. Is there any other new habit you can cultivate to improve yourself? 23. Avoid negative people. As Jim Rohn says, ââ¬Å"You are the average of the 5 people you spend the most time withâ⬠. Wherever we go, there are bound to be negative people. Donââ¬â¢t spend too much of your time around them if you feel they drag you down. 24. Learn to deal with difficult people. There are times when there are difficult people you canââ¬â¢t avoid, such as at your workplace, or when the person is part of your inner circle of contacts. Learn how to deal with them. These people management skills will go a long way in working with people in the future. 25. Learn from your friends. Everyone has amazing qualities in them. Itââ¬â¢s up to how we want to tap into them. With all the friends who surround you, they are going to have things you can learn from. Try thinking of a good friend right now. Think about just one quality they have which you want to adopt. How can you learn from them and adopt this skill for yourself? Speak to them if you need to ââ¬â for sure, they will be more than happy to help! 26. Start a journal. Journaling is a great way to gain better self-awareness. Itââ¬â¢s a self-reflection process. As you write, clarify your thought process and read what you wrote from a third personââ¬â¢s perspective, you gain more insights about yourself. Your journal can be private or an online blog. I use my personal development blog as a personal journal too and Iââ¬â¢ve learned a lot about myself through the past year of blogging. 27. Start a blog about personal development. To help others grow, you need to first be walking the talk. There are expectations of you, both from yourself and from others, which you have to uphold. I run The Personal Excellence Blog, where I share my personal journey and insights on how to live a better life. Readers look toward my articles to improve themselves, which enforces to me that I need to keep improving, for myself and for the people Iââ¬â¢m reaching out to. 28. Get a mentor or coach. Thereââ¬â¢s no faster way to improve than to have someone work with you on your goals. Many of my clients approach me to coach them in their goals and they achieve significantly more results than if they had worked alone. 29. Reduce the time you spend on chat programs. I realized having chat programs open at default result in a lot of wasted time. This time can be much better spent on other activities. The days when I donââ¬â¢t get on chat, I get a lot more done. I usually disable the auto start-up option in the chat programs and launch them when I do want to chat and really have the time for it. 0. Learn chess (or any strategy game). I found chess is a terrific game to learn strategy and hone your brainpower. Not only do you have fun, you also get to exercise your analytical skills. You can also learn strategy from other board games or computer games, such as Othello, Chinese Chess, WarCraft, and so on. 31. Stop watching TV. Iââ¬â¢ve not been watc hing TV for pretty much 4 years and itââ¬â¢s been a very liberating experience. I realized most of the programs and advertisements on mainstream TV are usually of a lower consciousness and not very empowering. In return, the time Iââ¬â¢ve freed up from not watching TV is now constructively used for other purposes, such as connecting with close friends, doing work I enjoy, exercising, etc. 32. Start a 30-day challenge. Set a goal and give yourself 30 days to achieve this. Your goal can be to stick with a new habit or something youââ¬â¢ve always wanted to do but have not. 30 days is just enough time to strategize, plan, get into action, review and nail the goal. 33. Meditate. Meditation helps to calm you and be more conscious. I also realized that during the nights when I meditate (before I sleep), I need lesser sleep. The clutter clearing process is very liberating. 34. Join Toastmasters (Learn public speaking). Interestingly, public speaking is the #1 fear in the world, with #2 being death. After I started public speaking as a personal development speaker/trainer, Iââ¬â¢ve learned a lot about how to communicate better, present myself and engage people. Toastmasters is an international organization that trains people in public speaking. Check out the Toastmaster clubs nearest to you here. 35. Befriend top people in their fields. These people have achieved their results because they have the right attitudes, skill sets and know-how. How better to learn than from the people who have been there and done that? Gain new insights from them on how you can improve and achieve the same results for yourself. 36. Let go of the past. Is there any grievance or unhappiness from the past which you have been holding on? If so, itââ¬â¢s time to let it go. Holding on to them prevents you from moving on and becoming a better person. Break away from the past, forgive yourself, and move on. Just recently, I finally moved on from a past heartbreak of 5 years ago. The effect was liberating and very empowering, and I have never been happier. 37. Start a business venture. Is there anything you have an interest in? Why not turn it into a venture and make money while learning at the same time? Starting a new venture requires you to be learn business management skills, develop business acumen and have a competitive edge. The process of starting and developing my personal development business has equipped me with many skills, such as self-discipline, leadership, organization and management. 38. Show kindness to people around you. You can never be too kind to someone. In fact, most of us donââ¬â¢t show enough kindness to people around us. Being kind helps us to cultivate other qualities such as compassion, patience, and love. As you get back to your day after reading this article later on, start exuding more kindness to the people around you, and see how they react. Not only that, notice how you feel as you behave kindly to others. Chances are, you will feel even better than yourself. 39. Reach out to the people who hate you. If you ever stand for something, you are going to get haters. Itââ¬â¢s easy to hate the people who hate us. Itââ¬â¢s much more challenging to love them back. Being able to forgive, let go and show love to these people requires magnanimity and an open heart. Is there anyone who dislikes or hates you in your life? If so, reach out to them. Show them love. Seek a resolution and get closure on past grievances. Even if they refuses to reciprocate, love them all the same. Itââ¬â¢s much more liberating than to hate them back. 40. Take a break. Have you been working too hard? Self-improvement is also about recognizing our need to take a break to walk the longer mile ahead. You canââ¬â¢t be driving a car if it has no petrol. Take some time off for yourself every week. Relax, rejuvenate and charge yourself up for whatââ¬â¢s up ahead. 41. Read at least 1 personal development article a day. Some of my readers make it a point to read at least one personal development article every day, which I think is a great habit. There are many terrific personal development blogs out there, some of which you can check here. 42. Commit to your personal growth. I can be writing list articles with 10 ways, 25 ways, 42 ways or even 1,000 ways to improve yourself, but if youââ¬â¢ve no intention to commit to your personal growth, it doesnââ¬â¢t matter what I write. Nothing is going to get through. We are responsible for our personal growth ââ¬â not anyone else. Not your mom, your dad, your friend, me or LifeHack. Make the decision to commit to your personal growth and embrace yourself to a life-long journey of growth and change. Kick off your growth by picking a few of the steps above and working on them. The second human is to explain the human relationships that existed at that time between the managers and the production line employees which where defined by non negotiable instructions and an absolute repression of mind expression for the production line employees. The third Human is to highlight the tremendous change in Human relationships and perceptions which gave the production line employees the absolute authority and freedom of managing their work and products and taking their own decisions for the sake of what they called our products quality. Our products quality is a very important statement to review in order to understand the concept I will be introducing and that if well implemented would fundamentally change the way we do business. The need of belonging has been considered by Maslow, one of the most important needs that a Human being can have, and that is absolutely true. Based on this reality, our imagination is the only limit of what a Human is capable to do to fulfill this need and business is a micro society in the macro society that is the worlds market. Introducing the new Paradigm:I believe that every person working in a business must be a shareholder in that business no matter what position or task he is responsible for, the shares must be rationally distributed based on the degree of responsibilities of each and every person. It is true that many companies nowadays have incentive a participation programs for their employees but at the end of the day, the employee is still the employee and the owner is still the owner. Working for themselves will not only increase their motivation but also sensibilise them to the real responsibilities since they will be responsible for the destiny of their business, in other words their own destiny. Several experiences showed the effectiveness of implicating all level staff in the decision process; this concept cannot but succeed even more in the way we do business. To illustrate my concept I would like to draw a concrete example of what can be done in the new generation business:One person X has an idea of company and believes in the success of this company so he registers it and starts the opening procedures. X is the managing director and he needs an assistant so he search for the person Y that have the appropriate profile for the position and ask him if he wants to be part of this company explaining to him that he will not have fixed salary but 20% of shares in this company. After that, the company needs a secretary and he or she will not have a fixed salary but 5% of the shares of the company. So on and so forth with the other 3 employees needed for the company and they will get 5% of the shares each and once again no fixed salary. Now the team is complete and business can start, in fact the earnings of each member of the team will depend only on the work and efforts done by each and every member of that team without distinction and here comes the beautiful part. Each employee is part of this business, he feels responsible in case of failure but also proud and accomplished in case of success, and we all know nobody like to fail. Challenges:Presented this way the concept seems too good to be true and indeed it contains huge challenges in its process:First, it is difficult to find people that want to share their innovative business ideas with other. Second, it is not easy to find people at all level willing to take risks without a security that is a fixed salary. Third, is the engagement the members of a team have since their shares are related to their specific position and task and cannot be sold to a person that cannot fulfill the same tasks as them. But, after all who said that life is easy and risk free, people must adapt and overcome. This is my way as future business owner of adapting and overcoming business life changes, by relying on business owners like me, that means all my team members.
